Departure from "Kardamena" Port

Nisyros is very close to the island of Kos and is one of the smallest and undoubtedly most beautiful islands of the Dodecanese. The newest active, large volcano in the Aegean is located on the island. We depart by boat at 09:30 a.m. from Kardamena to Nisyros and our journey takes about 50 minutes. Upon arrival on the island we will board the bus and drivefor half an hour in the direction of the volcanic craters.

Enjoy the mountain route, observe the color differences between the rocks that stand out due to the eruptions in prehistoric times. Halfway, before you start the descent of the mountain to the crater, admire the incredible panoramic view of all the craters from above. The stop in the craters is about 40 minutes. Walk in them and  feel the living volcano boiling under your feet. You will feel the high temperature due to the volcano and the smell of the various –mostly sulfurous- gases it emits through the holes in the ground.

On this excursion, you will have the opportunity to stand inside a volcano crater while the lava rests deep down in the earth underneath.

Our next stop is in Mandraki where you can visit the old Byzantine castle, which houses the Monastery of PanagiaNisyros, carved into the rock. Legend has it that the monastery was founded by pirates who became its first monks. Enjoy your free time to explore Mandraki, the old woman's square with its traditional restaurants and the promenade with its shops and cafes.

Local dishes include kapama (stuffed goat with rice), pittia (chickpea fritters), boukounies (pork cooked in fat), local cheese, pastries and soumada liqueur (made of almonds). A wonderful day awaits you, full of sea, mountain and volcano views, walks in the traditional alleys of Mandraki and flavors of local dishes.
